Unicorn Cupcake Melt and Pour Soap: 3 Ways to Top Cupcake Soap

By Anna

These unicorn cupcake melt and pour soaps have three bright neon layers poured at angles, topped three different ways: soap curls, whipped shea butter and piped Melt Whip & Pipe (MWP). A little unicorn figure on top makes them a fun gift for kids. The silicone cupcake liners give each soap a real cupcake shape.

Fragrance Amount

Use up to 5 ml of fragrance oil per 16 oz (1 lb) of soap base. You can always use less if you like a lighter scent, but don’t go over 5 ml per 16 oz. Check your fragrance’s flash point. Mine was 127°F, so I waited until the soap was cool enough before adding it.

How to Make Unicorn Cupcake Melt and Pour Soap

1. Set Up the Cupcake Liners

Place the silicone cupcake liners in a regular muffin pan. They already have a cupcake shape, so the finished soaps look like real cupcakes. I made about eight.

2. Pour the First Neon Layer at an Angle

Melt shea butter base, add fragrance once it’s below its flash point and mix in Cosmic Blue. Prop one side of the muffin pan up on books so the liners tilt. Pour just enough blue to fill the low side of each liner. Spray with alcohol and let it set.

3. Turn and Pour Orange

Melt more shea butter (about 120°F), add fragrance and mix in Orange Mango. Turn the liners around so the empty side is low. The first layer is set enough that it won’t spill. Score the blue with a skewer, spray with alcohol and pour the orange.

4. Pour the Green Top Layer

Lay the pan flat. Mix Green Lightning into more shea butter. Score the top in a tic-tac-toe pattern and spray with alcohol. Wait until the green is below 135°F so it doesn’t melt into the orange, then pour it on top.

5. Topping #1: Soap Curls and a Unicorn

Make soap curls by peeling a bar of soap with a vegetable or potato peeler without a guard. While the green layer is still soft, spray the bottom of a unicorn figure with alcohol, press it on top and arrange the curls around it.

6. Topping #2: Whipped Shea Butter

Melt leftover blue soap (about 150°F) and whip it with the hand mixer until it reaches a good trace. Mine was about 103°F. Score the top of the cupcake, spray with alcohol, then spoon on the whipped soap and shape it. It sets quickly, so work fast. Press a unicorn on top.

7. Topping #3: Piped Melt Whip & Pipe

Heat the MWP in a plastic container to about 190°F, fold in Cosmic Blue and whisk it with the hand mixer. Add a little fragrance once it cools to about 123°F. If it gets fussy, add a little water and reheat. Put a dollop in the middle of the scored top, then pipe around it. It comes out with a pretty satin finish.

8. Unmold

Let the cupcakes set. Peel the silicone liners off gently, without grabbing the design or the unicorn. The MWP takes 24–48 hours to harden before packaging.

Tips & What I Learned

  • Tilt the pan for angled layers. A few books under one side make the layers look fun.
  • Score and spray between layers. It keeps the layers from separating.
  • Wait for the flash point. Add fragrance only once the soap is cool enough.
  • Pour under 135°F over set layers. It keeps the neon colors crisp.
  • Save leftover MWP. Bag it and reheat it for another project.
  • Add glitter. A sprinkle of bio glitter would make these even cuter.

Troubleshooting

The layers mixed together.
The top layer was too hot. Let it cool below 135°F.

The whipped topping set before I could shape it.
Whipped soap sets fast. Have everything ready and work quickly.

The topping is sliding off.
Score the top and spray with alcohol before adding it.

FAQ

How much fragrance oil should I use?

Up to 5 ml per 16 oz of soap base. You can always use less, but don’t use more than 5 ml per 16 oz.

Are the unicorns soap?

No. They’re small figures sold separately, used as decorations on top.

Which topping is best?

They’re all cute. Soap curls are easiest, whipped soap is quick, and MWP gives the prettiest piped look.
