Confetti in Clear Melt and Pour Soap: Recycling a Soap I Didn’t Like

By Anna

Have a soap you don’t love? Shred it into confetti! This is the third version of a soap I wasn’t happy with. I shredded the original into colorful confetti and, this time, suspended it in crystal clear melt and pour base. It almost looks like it’s underwater, and it’s my favorite version yet.

Materials & Tools

Soap Base

  • Crystal clear melt and pour soap base
  • Shredded soap confetti from a soap you want to recycle (mine was purple, pink, green and blue)

Scent

  • No extra fragrance needed. The confetti is already scented, and skipping it keeps the clear base as clear as possible.

Tools

Fragrance Amount

If you do add fragrance, use up to 5 ml of fragrance oil per 16 oz (1 lb) of soap base, and remember the confetti is already scented. You can always use less.

How to Make Confetti in Clear Soap

1. Shred Your Soap

Shred the soap you want to recycle into confetti with a salad shooter or grater.

2. Melt the Clear Base

Melt the clear base gently. Overheating can cloud it. Mine was about 143°F when melted.

3. Cool Before Adding Confetti

Wait until the soap is in the 120s so the confetti doesn’t melt and the colors don’t bleed. Go as cool as you can without the base skinning over. I find this brand stays fluid at lower temperatures than some other clear bases.

4. Layer Soap and Confetti

Pour a little clear soap into the mold, add confetti, spray with alcohol, and repeat until the mold is full.

5. Unmold and Cut

Let it set, then unmold and cut. The confetti stays suspended through each bar.

6. Compare the Versions

The first version was made in shea butter melt and pour and I didn’t love it. The second version put the shredded confetti into white shea butter base. This clear version is my favorite.

Tips & What I Learned

  • Never waste a soap. Shred it and start again.
  • Keep clear base unscented. Fragrance can cloud or tint it, and the confetti is already scented.
  • Don’t overheat clear base. It can lose its clarity.
  • Pour in the 120s. Hotter soap melts the confetti.
  • Low sweat bases help. They hold up well even in humid weather.

Troubleshooting

The clear soap is cloudy. It was overheated, or fragrance was added. Melt gently in short bursts.

The confetti colors bled. The soap was too hot. Let it cool more.

The confetti floated to the top. Add it in layers with a little soap each time.

FAQ

What’s the best way to shred soap?

A salad shooter is fastest. A hand grater works too.

Can I add a decoration on top?

Yes. A seashell or other embed on top would look great with this underwater look.
