Spooky Swirl Halloween Melt and Pour Soap in Orange and Charcoal

By Anna

This spooky swirl Halloween melt and pour soap is mostly charcoal black with a dramatic orange swirl running through it. It was my very first time trying the funnel technique, where you push a silicone funnel into the soap and pour a second color down inside it. It came out so much better than I expected!

Fragrance Amount

Use up to 5 ml of fragrance oil per 16 oz (1 lb) of soap base. You can always use less if you like a lighter scent, but don’t go over 5 ml per 16 oz. Monkey Farts contains vanillin, which can darken soap over time. That’s not a problem in the black, so I only scented that part.

How to Make Spooky Swirl Soap

1. Get the Mold and Funnel Ready

This rigid square mold holds about 21–22 oz and cuts into four 1-inch bars. Silicone funnels are easy to clean because you can turn them inside out.

2. Mix the Charcoal

Melt the clear base and split it, with most of it for the black. Mix the charcoal with a little alcohol and stir it into the larger portion. Add the fragrance.

3. Mix a Bright Orange

Melt a little white color block into the smaller portion so the orange shows up against the black. Then stir in the orange mica.

4. Pour the Black

Pour the charcoal soap into the mold and let it develop a skin. Let the orange cool too. You want both down into the 120s or lower.

5. Pour the Orange Through the Funnel

Spray the black with alcohol, poke a hole, and push the funnel down into the soap. Pour the orange through the funnel and move it around. My orange got a little clumpy and stopped in the funnel, so I stirred it around with a chopstick to keep it flowing.

6. Unmold and Cut

Let it set overnight. Rigid molds take a little more effort, so push down to break the seal. Cut into four bars of about 5.6 oz each.

Tips & What I Learned

  • Lighten the orange. A little white color block helps it stand out against the black.
  • Don’t let it get too thick. Clumpy soap clogs the funnel.
  • Keep vanillin fragrance in the black. It can turn lighter colors brown.
  • Silicone funnels are easy to clean. Turn them inside out and wash.
  • Try other colors. This technique would look great with almost any color combination.

Troubleshooting

The soap won’t go through the funnel. It’s too thick. Warm it in 10-second bursts or use a wider funnel.

The orange disappeared into the black. Add some white color block so the orange is brighter and more opaque.

The loaf is stuck in the mold. Loosen all four sides and press down firmly to break the seal.

FAQ

How does the funnel technique work?

You push a funnel down into the first color while it’s soft and pour the second color through it. The color spreads inside the bar and makes a swirl.

Can I use a different fragrance?

Yes. Any fragrance works. Just stay at or under 5 ml per 16 oz.
